CDC admits it blew its big moment in the spotlight after widespread backlash, vows 'reset'

CDC no longer recommends students quarantine for COVID-19 exposure

The director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday announced a "reset" that will focus on making the organization quicker at responding to new health threats amid criticism of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CDC's director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, told the agency's staff about the changes, which include internal staffing moves and steps to speed up data releases.

"For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations," she said in a statement obtained by The Washington Post. "My goal is a new, public health action-oriented culture at CDC that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, communication, and timeliness."

The changes are a CDC initiative and were not directed by the White House or other administration officials, Walensky said.

Millions of BT, Virgin and Sky users affected by broadband shake up next week

Millions of residents across the United Kingdom will be able to get cheaper internet in a simple and easy fashion from next week - with a new system coming into play.

As of next week, it will be far simpler for UK internet consumers to access broadband for cheaper. Most of Britain's larger Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are already offering cheaper discounts for families in receipt of benefits like Universal Credit - but many aren't taking advantage of the deals with a lack of knowledge.

Recent statistics show that just 1.2 per cent of eligible parties have taken up ISPs on cut-price packages, with entitlement confusion as well as the hassle of proving that benefits are being claimed being a couple of reasons why people aren't taking up more affordable plans. That's all about to change however, with a new Department for Work and Pensions scheme coming into play next week - which allows ISPs to do all of the intricate groundwork for customers across the UK.

The Express reports that from August 22, the only thing a UK broadband consumer must do is tell their ISP that they wish to be considered for a reduced-price plan, with the provider then verifying whether or not the customer is in receipt of a suitable benefit. The new system will also allow the process to become simplified, by removing the need to customers to provide proof of entitlement as regularly as every month. Some significant savings can be had with major firms like BT, Sky and Virgin Media - who offer plans from as little as £15 per month. This is far cheaper than the standard tariffs which usually start in the ball park of £25 per month.

Speaking about the changes, Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries, said: "Social tariffs are vital for families struggling with bills, keeping them connected even in tough times. Our discussion with broadband companies led to the range of social tariffs on the market today and we've secured a raft of new cost-of-living commitments from them to ensure help is available for anyone that needs it.

He ain’t Latino!” John Leguizamo sounds off on the casting of James Franco as Fidel Castro

Following the recent news of James Franco being cast as former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, it rightfully caused controversy across the Latinx community as well as Hollywood. Many Latinx actors and workers in the industry called out the negligence of Hollywood, which that continues to cast white actors in non-white roles.

Franco’s past sexual misconduct allegations only add to the bad publicity surrounding the casting.

Encanto star John Leguizamo has been one of the most vocal since he took to Instagram to express his disbelief and disappointment.

“How is this still going on?---How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement, which would b wrong! I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!” Leguizamo wrote in a post. Latin exclusion in Hollywood is real—Don’t get it twisted! Long long history of it! And appropriation of our stories even longer! Why can’t Latinxers play Latin roles? Why can’t we play lead roles? Why can’t they flip white roles to Latin guys and gals?” he continued.

The film, Alina of Cuba: La Hija Rebelde from director Miguel Bardem, cast Franco based on Portuguese roots found on his father's side and because of similar facial features and structure to Castro.

Leguizamo has been a long time advocate for Hispanic and Latinx inclusion in the acting industry.

The militants collected their cell phones, actually preventing one of first women's dissenters in months.

Since the Taliban invasion, mothers rights' were heavily restricted.

The agitators recited expectations for "bread, work and freedom", holding a british flag learning "August 15 is a black day" - a citation to a day the Taliban seized Kabul in 2021.

"They didn't beat us much this time," one of it's protesting students told the BBC.

"They acted differently than earlier protests [when we were beaten]. They fired shots in the air. Though we're afraid we came out to advocate for the rights of girls, so that at least the Taliban will open schools for them."
